Experrs have warned motorists could also be in breach of some driving rules.
He said: “Christmas is the most likely time of the year to have the car packed to the rafters with all sorts of items and people.
“But these overloaded vehicles can create a unique danger if certain steps are not followed.

“Heavy suitcases would make it even more dangerous.
“It’s therefore urged to use anything from bungee cords and gaffer tape to lash down anything loose and make sure it does not become a potential killer.”
Research from luggage firm Fixeta showed in a crash at just 37mph, products can multiply in weight by 56 times.
This means a standard carry bag weighed at 10kg would hit passengers at over 500kg.
Meanwhile, piling items in a vehicle that could block drivers vision of the road is likely to land drivers with penalties.
Road users could be hit with a £1,000 fine and up to three penalty points for the error
More severe penalties could also be issued if blocked road vision leads to a serious accident.
