Drivers warned of potential road closure chaos over Coronation weekend

On Saturday, May 6, King Charles III will officially be crowned alongside Queen Consort Camilla as Britons look to celebrate the Coronation. To celebrate the proceedings, people around the UK will be hosting street parties and other events, with experts warning that travel could be severely disrupted.

The “much-needed celebration” will see the Coronation take place on Saturday morning, followed by the BBC’s Coronation Concert on Sunday evening.

On bank holiday Monday, people will be invited to take part in The Big Help Out to encourage people to volunteer in their local areas.

Graham Conway, managing director of Select Car Leasing, commented on the Royal celebrations and what it could mean for drivers.

He said: “We’re all looking forward to celebrating the King’s Coronation and the bank holiday weekend promises plenty of fun and pageantry.

“But it’s worth noting that there will be road closures in place to allow proud Brits to join in with the festivities by hosting street parties.”

Mr Conway added that all three days of the bank holiday weekend could see street parties, not just Saturday, the day of the coronation.

Most local councils will be posting details of which streets are set to be closed for celebrations, with many having already done so.

Organisers of larger events had to inform authorities up to 12 weeks in advance to give time to prepare for road closures and necessary provisions.

According to Select Car Leasing, smaller gatherings, including those on quiet cul-de-sacs, do not need official permission.

Graham Conway continued, saying: “The parties are likely to be taking place at different times across the three-day bank holiday weekend, so it’s well worth doing some research online to find out when and where they are being staged.

“It will give people the chance to get together with friends, family and neighbours to raise a glass to His Royal Highness and take a break from everyday stresses and strains.

“But it’s important that these festivities pass off safely, so being aware of what is going on in your local area and how it will affect your own plans is crucial.”

People looking to park may also have issues, with the road closures potentially blocking access to properties and driveways.

Councils like Westminster Council have warned that parking restrictions will be in place and people may be prevented from leaving if streets are closed.

Those with resident parking permits may need to look for alternative spaces to leave their car if they need to travel over the three-day weekend.

However, to cope with the changes, some local authorities will be increasing the number of alternative travel options.

For example, Transport for London networks will be running with no planned engineering closures, with extra Night Tube and Overground services on Friday and Saturday.

A number of key streets in central London will be closed to make way for the procession from Buckingham Palace to Westminster Abbey.
