Drivers warned of rare signs on the road and what they mean

0

According to new research, only 25 percent of UK drivers could correctly identify the following three important road signs.

While there are some road signs that are more common, like speed limit or cyclist warning signs, there are others which are far rarer, yet just as important.

Ashley Johnson, sales manager at Parkland Motors, said: “The purpose of road signs is to give instructions to motorists, cyclists and pedestrians to ensure safety whilst travelling on the roads.

“Signs can give warnings, orders or general information depending on the shape and colour.

“These following road signs are rare to see but knowing what they mean can prepare you for if you ever come across them whilst driving.”

Side winds

Of the three unusual signs, this may be the most commonly seen, especially in coastal regions and in rural areas.

It indicates that there are strong winds, with drivers being warned of strong gusts coming from either side, meaning they need to be aware of their surroundings.

When driving, this can lead to a number of accidents, especially in areas where tree branches and other debris could get swept into the way.

The sign shows a wind sock and lets drivers know that they can expect strong winds to the side of their vehicle and to exercise caution.

Vehicles carrying explosives prohibited

The sign depicts a car with a large explosion bursting from it, and is likely meant to grab the driver’s attention.

However, it is unlikely that most motorists will ever come into contact with it on the roads.

The sign refers to vehicles carrying explosives being strictly prohibited, rather than explosives near the road.

Risk of grounding

This road sign can sometimes be found near railways, trams and level crossings and warn drivers that their car could get stuck.

It is designed to warn motorists that their vehicle is at risk of grounding at crossings or hump-backed bridges.

When driving the additional height of the hump could scrape along the underside of the vehicle and leave the four tyres suspended in the air.
