Dubai Watch Week is coming to New York. The watch forum and show held in Dubai since 2015 has generally drawn collectors from the Middle East and Europe, but now North American collectors can join the fun – for free – in a recreation of the event entitled Moves New York. The three day event will not have a show component this year – so no new watch introductions – but consists of forum discussions between collectors, craftsman, industry executives, journalists and aficionados. There will also be hands-on workshops and watchmaking demonstrations and even a watch photography class. Plus. Christie’s auction house will do a presentation on collecting. Moves New York will take place from September 24 to 25 at 875 Washington St. in Manhattan’s Meatpacking District.
On Saturday, a panel discussion entitled Made in America will explore the current grass-roots attempts to revive watchmaking as a local industry in the United States. Panelists include hollywood actor and watch enthusiast Aldis Hodge, and Eric Wind, a renowned vintage watch expert and owner of Wind Vintage. They will discuss the increasing consumer demand by Americans for “Made in America.” The moderator will be Cara Barrett, formerly of watch blog Hodinkee and founder of direct-to-consumer children’s watch brand Parchie. Also on Saturday is a panel entitled The People Vs. Luxury, an exploration of the influence of consumers, media and culture on luxury products. Panelists will respond to the question “How powerful is clickbait and is it affecting authenticity.” The moderator is Jian DeLeon, editorial and fashion director at Nordstrom Men’s. Panelists include Mark Cho, co-founder of menswear brand The Armoury and co-owner of menswear brand Drake’s, and Rebecca Ross, assistant vice-president and head of sale for watches at Christie’s New York.
Attendees are also invited to participate in a private tour of Patek Philippe clocks called Meeting Point: The World’s Largest Collection of Patek Philippe Electronic Clocks. While most are well aware of Patek Philippe’s status as the world’s greatest watchmaker, few know about the brand as a maker of some of the finest atomic and quartz clocks ever produced. The exhibition includes 40 electronic clocks that were custom made by Patek Philippe between the 1950s and 1980s, each telling an important story of time and place. The one-of-a-kind collection was assembled over nearly four decades and includes clocks which served to power iconic institutions including the Swiss Parliament, international airports, a nuclear power station, a Swedish military hospital and the French Navy. The signature piece in the collection is an entirely unique double stamped Patek Philippe Chronoquartz Master Timing System made by Patek Philippe for Rolex circa 1968. It is located at Analog:Shift at 145 East 57th Street, 12th Floor, by appointment only. Contact John Reardon at john@collectability.com
