Dubois drags himself off canvas three times to deliver explosive KO

Daniel Dubois survived an early scare to stop Kevin Lerena in the third round as he successfully defended his WBA (regular) heavyweight title. The young Brit picked himself up off the canvas three times to deliver a stunning KO in the co-main event of the Tyson Fury vs Derek Chisora bill.

Dubois opened up proceedings by establishing distance with his trademark ram-rodding jab. The Brit looked extremely comfortable and was moving well until Lerena landed a big right hand on the top of his head, sending Triple D to the canvas.

The shot appeared to knock Dubois off balance causing him to overextend his leg and seemingly injure his knee. Looking unsteady on his feet, Dubois was dropped two more times and was saved by the bell.

However, Dubois came back strong, walking Lerena onto his shots and slowing down the pace in round two. After taking the second, Triple D stepped up the tempo in round three before knocking down Lerena with a short right hand.

“I was looking for shots that weren’t there and I listened to Shane [McGuigan] and he told me how to recover and then I came back out.”

Dubois’ trainer Shane McGuigan then added that he thinks his fighter has damaged one of the ligaments in his knee. “You can see on his leg, it’s really swollen, there was no strength there when he was throwing shots in the first round. His knee was buckling, we’re going to have to go and get a scan but it’s sink or swim in these situations and he swam tonight.”
