Duke basketball: Paolo Banchero, Coach K’s grandson Michael Savarino face charges following DWI arrest

A pair of Duke basketball players were arrested after a DWI arrest in Orange County on Sunday morning.

Michael Savarino, the grandson of Duke basketball coach Mike Krzyzewski was arrested for DWI on Sunday morning in Orange County. The 20-year-old was pulled over after a stop sign violation, according to News & Observer.

In the vehicle with Sabarino was his Duke basketball teammate and ACC preseason player of the year, Paolo Banchero.

Banchero, 19, was charged with aiding and abetting DWI.

Savarino has a Dec. 19 court date. Banchero has a Dec. 18 court date.

“We are reviewing a legal matter involving two members of the men’s basketball team,” Krzyzewski said in a statement released by Duke athletics to the News & Observer. “Any further actions as a result of this situation will ultimately be determined by the Vice President/Director of Athletics and University officials.”

Duke hosts Gardner-Webb on Tuesday evening. Their status for the game has not been revealed, but it’s fair to assume both will not be available pending Duke’s review of the legal matter of Savarino and Banchero.

Savarino is the son of Debbi Savarino, an assistant athletics director at Duke, and the eldest daughter of Krzyzewski and his wife Mickie. He was a walk-on to begin his Duke basketball career was awarded a scholarship last season.

Banchero was the team’s highest-ranked recruit this season and a potential No. 1 pick in the NBA Draft. He’s likely a one-and-done player for Duke. The 6-foot-10, 250-pound big man from Seattle, Washington is averaging 19,3 points and 8.7 rebounds per game in three games for Duke this season.
