“You can’t make this $hit up,” declares the first trailer for the upcoming true story comedy drama, Dumb Money. Released courtesy of Sony Pictures Entertainment, and starring the likes of Paul Dano, Sebastian Stan, Seth Rogen, and Pete Davidson, Dumb Money chronicles the GameStop short squeeze from back in January 2021, which saw a ragtag collection of amateur traders bring Wall Street to its knees. Check out the first trailer for Dumb Money below.
Directed by Craig Gillespie (I, Tonya, Cruella), from a script by Lauren Schuker Blum and Rebecca Angelo, and based on the book The Antisocial Network: The GameStop Short Squeeze and the Ragtag Group of Amateur Traders That Brought Wall Street to Its Knees by Ben Mezrich, Dumb Money is based on the wild true story of a group of enthusiastic, fledgling investors from the Reddit page called Wall Street Bets, who banded together to put the squeeze on at least two hedge funds that had bet that GameStop shares would fall.
Dumb Money is the ultimate David vs. Goliath tale, and follows the people who flipped the script on Wall Street and got rich by turning GameStop (yes, the mall videogame store) into the world’s hottest company. In the middle of everything is regular guy Keith Gill (Paul Dano), who starts it all by sinking his life savings into the stock and posting about it. When his social posts start blowing up, so does his life and the lives of everyone following him. As a stock tip becomes a movement, everyone gets rich – until the billionaires fight back, and both sides find their worlds turned upside down.
Dumb Money Is Led by an All-Star Cast
The true story of Dumb Money is being brought to life by an all-star cast. The Batman and There Will Be Blood star Paul Dano leads the way as Keith Gill, the financial analyst and investor who has been called a driving factor in the GameStop short squeeze.
Dano is joined by the likes of Pete Davidson (The King of Staten Island, Bodies, Bodies, Bodies) as Kevin Gill, Keith’s brother; Vincent D’Onofrio (Daredevil, Jurassic World) as hedge fund manager and owner of the New York Mets, Steve Cohen; America Ferrera (Superstore, Barbie) as fan and viewer of Keith’s YouTube channel, Jennifer Campbell; Nick Offerman (Parks and Recreation, The Last of Us) as hedge fund manager and entrepreneur Kenneth C. Griffin; Sebastian Stan (Pam & Tommy, Avengers: Endgame) as CEO of Robinhood, Vlad Tenev; and Shailene Woodley (The Fault in Our Stars) as Caroline Gill, Keith’s wife.
But that’s not all! Dumb Money also stars familiar faces such as Seth Rogen (This is the End), Dane DeHaan (Chronicle), Anthony Ramos (Transformers: Rise of the Beasts), and Myha’la Herrold (Industry), with Rushi Kota (Never Have I Ever) and Talia Ryder (Do Revenge) also set to feature.
Following a recent release date change, Dumb Money is now set to land in theaters on September 22, 2023.
