Dundee have appointed Tony Docherty as the club’s new manager.

The 52-year-old replaces Gary Bowyer, who departed Dens Park having led the side back to the Premiership as champions at the first attempt.

Docherty, who had been assistant boss to Derek McInnes at Kilmarnock, helped the Ayrshire side secure their top-flight status with a won over Ross County on Sunday.

It is his first managerial position after similar spells as a number two alongside McInnes at St Johnstone, Bristol City and Aberdeen.

Gordon Strachan, Dundee’s technical director, worked with Docherty during his time in the Scotland set up.

He said: “Tony is a guy that has been there and done it in Scottish football, at a number of clubs alongside Derek.

“I had the privilege to witness Tony’s coaching skills first-hand when he joined the Scotland coaching team. We know that next season is a big one for the club and Tony knows what it takes to win matches in this league, and that’s what we need. I’m thrilled we’ve got Tony onboard.”
