Dungeons and Dragons movie review – Marvel meets Lord of the Rings

The best thing about Dungeons and Dragons: Honour Among Thieves is the swashbuckling action sequences, full of weird and wonderful characters, magic and humour that is perfect for this style of popcorn cinema. Yes, there’s CGI aplenty but it isn’t half bad and works well for the video gamey Zelda-esque quests.

The comedy between the characters works well too, especially in a scene trying to get answers out of reanimated corpses, while Hugh Grant’s rapscallion con artist Forge plays up to his Paddington 2 villain to a tee. Sure his performance is a little hammy with tongue-firmly-in-cheek, but the movie embraces this to its advantage.

Owning it entirely and totally stealing the show is Bridgerton heartthrob Regé-Jean Page, whose appearance on screen induced gasps of desire from thirsty audience members.

The next James Bond favourite only has a small part, but certainly leaves his mark as Xenk, a paladin knight in shining armour who is perfect at everything he attempts, through the most hilarious deadpan sincerity.
