Dana White says in July that McGregor v Poirier 4 could happen

Dustin Poirier has claimed he would be willing to face Conor McGregor again but only if it takes place in a boxing ring.

‘The Diamond’ defeated McGregor twice in 2021, most recently securing victory when the Irishman breaking his leg during their trilogy bout in July.

Poirier has since been handed a devastating blow after suffering submission defeat to Charles Oliveira and is assessing his future options.

When asked if he would be opened to a fourth meeting with McGregor, Poirier responded on Twitter : “Probably not.”

He was later asked if he would enter the boxing ring to which he replied: “I’d love to, no rear naked chokes there.”

Poirier was then asked if he would face McGregor in the boxing ring, which he tweeted in response: “Book it.”

The American star also confirmed he would be willing to fight Diaz who has been calling for him ever since his defeat to Oliveira at the end of last year.

However he quickly moved to dismiss a meeting with lightweight contender Michael Chandler who is set to face Tony Ferguson in his next bout.

Poirier lost to McGregor in their maiden meeting back in 2014 with an opening round knockout, but later avenged his defeat with a second-round stoppage on ‘Fight Island’.

His most recent victory over McGregor came in July where he secured another victory in the opening round after McGregor was left unable to continue after breaking his leg.

McGregor has already fought in the boxing ring in a huge clash against Floyd Mayweather which generated over $500million.

This could be an appeal to Poirier who has previously entertained the idea of more financially rewarding fights in the aftermath of his clashes with McGregor.

His Irish rival is currently focused on his recovery from injury and is not expecting to return to action until the summer.

Meanwhile Poirier verbally agreed a clash with Diaz but talks have not yet materialised in an official capacity with the UFC.

McGregor and Poirier are unlikely to do battle again in the UFC after the tough defeats McGregor faced last year.

The 33-year-old has been warned by UFC legend Chael Sonnen that any fourth meeting would be “weird” and could depend on his future in terms of weight.

“Poirier vs Conor works,” Sonnen said in a YouTube video. “I understand that but part four is a little weird.

“Particularly when two and three didn’t have a single round won by Conor, it was very uncompetitive.

Conor has been for a meaningful period of time and will live the rest of his career on the same unique spot that he monopolises, which is, whatever he does, is going to work.

“Does Conor have the same pursuit of getting back to a world championship? If that answer is yes he has to pick a division.”
