Dwayne Johnson’s Young Rock Series Canceled After Three Seasons at NBC

Dwayne Johnson’s Young Rock Series Canceled After Three Seasons at NBC

It looks like Dwayne Johnson’s NBC series Young Rock, which takes a look at the at times unbelievable journey the wrestler-turned-actor has been on, has reached the end of the road at NBC after 3 seasons. The show was officially canceled today, and while there has been no response from Johnson yet, the news will undoubtedly come as another blow to the actor following the collapse of Black Adam and his DCU dream.

Young Rock proved to be a hit for the network when it originally aired, and featuring the man himself as he retold many colorful periods in his early life, however, when season 3 landed at the end of 2022 the series took a drop in viewership. According to Deadline, Nielsen data suggested that the show pulled in around 1.4 million viewers and a rating in the show’s main demographic. When comparing this to the 3 million viewers and 0.62 rating of season 1, and reasonable 2.23 million viewers and 0.39 rating for season 2, it seems that NBC aren’t taking the risk of another season taking a similar dip again.

When the third season arrived, co-creator Nahnatchka Khan seems to believe there was still plenty of gas in the tank, explaining how the life of Johnson was perfect material for the show. She said:

“He’s one of those famous people on the planet. Even if you don’t really know that much about Dwayne Johnson, a lot of people have a cursory passing knowledge of who he is and what he’s done. But there’s so much that people don’t know about how he got to where he is. I think that’s what we’re interested in exploring … the surprising moments and the times where it was really tough for him and his family.”

It seems that perhaps people were not quite as on board with discovering much more about the Rock’s younger years as first thought.

Despite claiming he would never return to the Fast & Furious franchise, Dwayne Johnson made a surprise appearance at the end of Fast X, reprising his role as Luke Hobbs and setting up his rerun to the franchise as it comes to its conclusion. Johnson himself addressed his return via social media, also touching on how he has moved beyond his feud with Vin Diesel. Johnson said:

“Hope you’ve got your funderwear on… HOBBS IS BACK. And he just got lei’d. Luke Hobbs will be returning to the Fast & Furious franchise. Your reactions around the world to Hobbs’ return in Fast X have blown us away. The next Fast & Furious film you’ll see the legendary lawman in will be the HOBBS movie that will serve as a fresh, new chapter & set up for FASTX: Part II. Last summer Vin and I put all the past behind us. We’ll lead with brotherhood and resolve – and always take care of the franchise, characters & FANS that we love.”

With his Fast & Furious future now set, along with a live-action appearance in Disney’s Moana remake, his Christmas movie Red One, Dwayne Johnson still has plenty in the pipeline to keep him occupied, and we can assume it will not be long before he is adding more to that list.
