E10 fuel changes have left vehicles “gutless and very thirsty”‘ as drivers continue to complain about fuel efficiency issues. One driver has even complained they are losing more than six miles per gallon since making the switch to the new compound.
Several other drivers even admitted to switching back to E5 after having such a bad experience with the new mix.
Express reader Yarn Dave said: “I have a two-year-old Toyota Rav4 Hybrid, my economy has dropped from 49mpg to 42.9 mpg.
“This is using several full tanks to see these figures.
“I am back on E5 paying 5 percent more than E10.

Express reader ‘Reaction’ said: “Both our cars [are] compatible and in all honesty, I haven’t noticed any difference in the MPG as shown on the instruments.”
Replying, Express reader ‘Reasonable’ added: “Well I have. I’m getting a good three percent to five percent fewer miles per gallon.
“That equates to a fuel price increase. “
They added: “We’re stuck with E10 so just make sure you use the stuff soon after purchase. Not giving it time to absorb corrosive water in the fuel.”
Some readers have even reported their vehicles being slightly damaged after using the new petrol.
Express reader FirstClass said: “[Sixth] gear is now redundant on my 18 [month] old Ford EcoSport. Gutless and very thirsty.”
The Department of Transport has previously warned fuel economy could be affected by the new E10 petrol. They said the impact on fuel economy was due to the lower energy density of ethanol compared to fossil petrol. Analysis by the DfT found fuel economy could be reduced by between one and two percent.
The RAC has also previously warned efficiency would be affected by the changes. RAC fuel spokesman Simon Williams said: “Those with E10 compatible cars will, unfortunately, find they are getting fewer miles to the gallon as the fuel is less efficient than E5 fuel, due to it containing five percent more ethanol.”
