The Eagles went from a shot at Super Bowl glory to cold defeat on a controversial call.
With 1:54 remaining in the fourth quarter of Super Bowl 2023, the Chiefs had a 3rd-and-8 from the Eagles’ 15-yard line. Quarterback Patrick Mahomes threw an incomplete pass intended for wide receiver JuJu Smith-Schuster and it appeared as though Philadelphia would get the ball back after a Chiefs’ field goal attempt, along with the possibility of Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts orchestrating a game-tying or game-winning drive.

Unfortunately for the Eagles, defensive back James Bradberry got flagged for a holding penalty on Smith-Schuster. The Chiefs received a fresh set of downs, eventually setting up a 27-yard game-winning field goal from Harrison Butker.
There was some dissent in the Fox Sports booth over whether the penalty was justified. Rules expert Mike Pereira thought that by the letter of the law, it should’ve been a penalty on Bradberry, while color commentator Greg Olsen thought the officials should’ve let the players play in such a high-leverage moment.
The Chiefs defeated the Eagles 38-35.
