TL;DR

  • Google has revealed that it will bring eSIM transfer functionality to Android later this year.
  • This mean you can easily switch your data plan to a new device much like a physical SIM.
  • Deutsche Telekom will be the first carrier to implement this feature.

eSIM technology is seeing major growth on high-end smartphones, but one issue with the modern SIM standard is that you can’t easily transfer your eSIM to a new phone.

Now, Google has announced that it’s bringing an eSIM transfer feature to Android to let users “quickly and securely” transfer their mobile plan to a new device.

Google confirmed that Deutsche Telekom will be the first network to take advantage of this capability. We hope this eSIM transfer feature is widely available on all carriers, though.

This isn’t the first time we’ve heard about an eSIM transfer capability coming to Android, though. Code sleuth Mishaal Rahman previously uncovered references to this feature back in January 2023. Rahman also suggested that Google could be working on a way to let users convert their physical SIM cards to an eSIM.

Either way, this will be a welcome addition to smartphones as transferring eSIMs still isn’t as seamless as using a physical SIM card.
