East Bay’s iSlice bringing its New York-style pizzas to San Jose

The East Bay-based iSlice is expanding to the South Bay with its foldable New York-style slices, calzones and cannoli.

The North San Jose eatery is expected to open in July, chef/owner Shiv Gurung said.

The first iSlice, in Albany, was established in 2017 but the story starts earlier. Gurung, a pizzeria veteran, launched a food trailer called “Amore Pizza” in Denver in 2013, then expanded the business with a restaurant and more food trucks. On a visit to the Bay Area, he noticed a dearth of New York-style pizza joints and set about to change that with a family-and-friends venture.

Besides Albany, there are locations in Concord near Todos Santos Plaza and at Concord’s Sunvalley Shopping Center. The San Jose one is taking over the space on North First Street at Technology Place, near Highway 101, formerly occupied by a Subway sandwich spot.

The sauce and dough are both made in-house. When it comes to whole pizzas, the margherita is the bestseller, Gurung said, and the top slice choices are the cheese and pepperoni ones. Other options include the Brooklyn (meatballs, bacon and onions), the Long Island (ham, bacon, pineapple), the Veggie (spinach, mushrooms, onions, green peppers and black olives), the Chicken Bacon Ranch and a create-your-own white-sauced pizza.

On the calzone menu, the chicken with ricotta and garlic is the most popular, he said.
