East Bengal are taking a long shot at qualifying for the Hero Super Cup semi-finals as they take on Aizawl FC in their last Group B match at Payyanad Stadium in Manjeri on Monday (April 17). The match starts at 5 PM IST.

East Bengal (2 points) are currently placed third on the table behind Odisha and Hyderabad FC, who are tied on four points each. This means Kolkata Giants will have to beat Aizawl by a four-goal margin and hope that Hyderabad and Odisha play out a draw later in the evening (8:30 PM kick-off).

Worst case scenario, East Bengal will at least have to win by a three-goal margin and hope that the other game sees a nil-nil draw or a stalemate. If any of Odisha and Hyderabad win their game, then East Bengal get knocked out as the winner of the match progresses to the semis.

East Bengal are at fault for their own plight as they squandered the lead in their first two group games, including a 3-3 draw against Hyderabad after taking a 3-1 draw by the end of the first half.

It’s the East Bengal defence that has come into question as manager Stephen Constantine’s favoured 4-4-2 formation has exposed the limitations of centre-backs Sarthak Golui and Lalchununga, who have often struggled to deal with the pace of foreign forwards and have been unconvincing in aerial duels as well.

The game against Hyderabad had positives to take from the attack as VP Suhair and Noarem Mahesh Singh put on a good show on the wings while the presence of foreign forwards Cleiton Silva and Jake Jervis as forwards has allowed the wing duo to express themselves more.

In midfield, Alex Lima has marshalled the centre of the park while somebody like Mobashir Rahman has done well in a box-to-box role. On Monday, they all need to click together and help out the defend in crisis. Aizawl FC, on the other hand, will play for pride as the bogey team of Group B are already out of the semifinal run.
