East Bengal endured another difficult season in ISL as they finished ninth in an 11-team top-tier league and came into the Super Cup hoping to turn their season around for the sake of their fans, who have been left disappointed over the last two seasons.

However, a draw against Odisha FC after a bright start by taking a lead of 1-0 through Mobashir Rahman following a spirited display gave many the feeling of the same old story repeating. The Stephen Constantine-led side, however, is a much better side now than they were at the beginning of the ISL season and could pose a threat to Hyderabad FC.

Constantine, however, showed his displeasure on the way the Super Cup has been organised as he was unhappy with the logistics and arrangements made for the tournament. The coach was unhappy that the press conference and the training group were hours away from their match locations. A report by the website ‘The Bridge’ claimed that the training ground allotted to East Bengal lacked floodlights for the player to train in the evening.

This could hamper their chances for the game as The Nizams are no pushover and won their opening game by defeating the group’s bogey side Aizawl FC 2-1. Hyderabad, who went out in the semifinals of ISL after finishing second on the points table, saw Joel Chianese and Joao Victor score the winning goals in the group opener. East Bengal also lost both their home and away games to the side in ISL last season.

Speaking ahead of the match, East Bengal coach Constantine praised his Hyderabad counterpart Manolo Marquez for setting up a fantastic side for a club that is a few years old into the league. “Manolo has done a fantastic job over the last few years, has taken the team to the playoffs and finished as champions,” Constantine was quoted as saying by Indiansuperleague.com.

Coach Manolo, however, is not reading much into the past head-to-head records between the clubs and has said their side will take this as a fresh match with new challenges as East Bengal have improved as a side.
