Conor Benn and Eddie Hearn have dismissed suggestions that a historic showdown with Chris Eubank Jr has been agreed for later this year.

Nigel Benn and Chris Eubank Snr shared one of British boxing’s great rivalries as they fought in two blistering contests in 1990 and 1993.

Their sons are now looking to replicate their world title successes with 25-year-old Benn hoping to lift himself into world title contention at welterweight after a sensational last 18 months. Eubank Jr meanwhile is campaigning at middleweight with a title shot of his own in his sights.

While the two have been chasing world titles in different divisions, there has been mounting speculation that a fight at a catchweight will go ahead later this year.

Benn’s promoter Hearn however insists reports that the fight has been sealed are wide of the mark.

‘Everyone presumes he’s fighting Eubank,’ Hearn told IFL TV.

‘There are no negotiations, we are not close to a Eubank fight. That fight is always massive. I’m talking to Kalle [Sauerland, Eubank’s promoter] this week but our focus is on other fights.

‘I’m not saying we wouldn’t take that fight. But it is not close or on the horizon.’

21-0 Benn has been linked with bouts against former world champions Keith Thurman, Danny Garcia and Adrien Broner for his next fight.

But the Ilford man has also played down talk of the Eubank Jr fight, pointing to recent speculation claiming he was set to take on Mikey Garcia who announced his retirement from boxing earlier this month.

Asked if he is fighting Eubank Jr next, Benn said: ‘Not that I’m aware of, no.

‘I swear I saw people were adamant I was fighting Mikey Garcia. Where did they get that one from?’

Eubank Jr, 32-2, is coming off the back of a comprehensive victory over Liam Williams in February.
