Eddie Hearn takes aim at Tyson Fury over heavyweight champion’s next fight

Matchroom Boxing chairman Eddie Hearn has claimed that Tyson Fury only cares about “the money” after agreeing to fight former UFC champion Francis Ngannou. In an interview with Piers Morgan, Hearn expressed his frustrations ahead of the bout and believes he should have instead defended his WBC heavyweight title.

Fury and Ngannou’s agreed fight will be The Gypsy King’s first steps into the ring for nine months. His last bout saw him defeat fellow Brit Derek Chisora via a TKO decision in the 10th round.

Following the result it was widely reported that the 34-year-old would face either Anthony Joshua or Oleksandr Usyk to defend his heavyweight title. However, Fury has instead agreed to face fomer UFC star Ngannou in Saudi Arabia.

The agreed bout left Anthony Joshua’s promoter Eddie Hearn frustrated as talks to fight Fury failed to materialise. Hearn has since addressed his annoyance at the deal while speaking on Talk TV show Piers Morgan Uncensored.

When asked why a deal failed to be agreed for Joshua to fight Fury, Hearn said: “I think it’s a lot of things, I think Tyson Fury, I’m not saying is slowly being found out, but he’s not always as truthful as he appears on Instagram.

“Timing is something. I think television rights and partnerships are something. Instagram is something. Ego is very much something. Everybody wants to see it, and on August 12 Anthony Joshua will fight Dillian Whyte on DAZN, after that he will fight Deontay Wilder in Saudi Arabia, and then after that it has to be Tyson Fury.”

Hearn was quick to then question Fury’s motive’s behind his fight with Ngannou, adding: “Tyson Fury turned down the Oleksandr Usyk fight, the most important fight in boxing, the undisputed heavyweight world championship, to fight an MMA fighter who’s never had a fight before in his life – also in Saudi Arabia.

“We’ve got to be honest, Tyson Fury cares about one thing only… the money. Don’t talk to me about legacy, don’t talk to me about undisputed.”

Morgan interjected to claim that Fury has beaten “everybody out there” with Hearn snapping back: “Who? Who is everybody out there? So he’s beat Klitschko and Wilder, that’s his wins. He needs to beat Usyk and AJ and then we can talk about him, as I believe he is, as one of the greatest heavyweights of all time.

“Listen, he’s unbelievable. What he’s come back from, incredible, couldn’t commend him more. But to create a legacy, to create that history, to go down as a modern day great, to put yourself up with [Muhammad] Ali, with Lennox Lewis, with Joe Frazier, those guys, he’s got to beat Usyk. And he’s got to beat Anthony Joshua, but particularly Usyk who’s the undisputed champion.”

Anthony Joshua will face Dillian Whyte in a rematch fight on Aug. 12 at the O2 Arena, with Fury taking on Ngannou in Saudi Arabia on Oct. 29.
