Ole Gunnar Solskjaer reviews Manchester City defeat

The international break will be a time to take stock for Manchester United.

After Saturday’s 2-0 home defeat to Manchester City, the Red Devils are already effectively out of the title race despite lavish spending in the summer. United were second best in every department against City too.

Although the pressure is mounting on manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, the indications are that the Old Trafford hierarchy will stick with the Norwegian for the time being. After the defeat to City and the emphatic 5-0 loss to Liverpool, there’s a big job to be done to steady the ship.

Here is the latest United news after another miserable weekend for the club.

Cavani ‘put out’ by Sancho request

According to The Athletic, Edinson Cavani felt “put out” after a request was made by Jadon Sancho to take his no. 7 jersey.

The forward eventually surrendered his shirt following the arrival of Cristiano Ronaldo in the summer and has been donning the no. 21 this season, which is what he typically wears when representing Uruguay.

But according to reports, Cavani was apparently less willing to give up the iconic shirt to Sancho.

United’s new winger, who has struggled since joining from Borussia Dortmund over the summer, instead took the no. 25.

Solskjaer’s decision surprises players and staff

According to the Daily Mail, United players and staff have been left surprised by Solskjaer’s decision to head back to Norway during the international break.

In the report it’s said that Solskjaer is returning to his homeland to spend some time with his family over the next week, with the players not on international duty also given seven days to recuperate following the derby defeat.

Ferdinand calls for change

Speaking on his Vibe with Five YouTube show, former United defender Rio Ferdinand has called for some new leadership at United.

While being critical of the way the team has played lately, Ferdinand has resisted calling for the manager to be axed, with many pointing out the fact that the pair were former team-mates.

However, Ferdinand made it clear on Monday that something needs altering at Old Trafford to arrest the current slide.

Vote: Should Solskjaer remain Man Utd manager?

“I was always deep down a bit sceptical, could he take us on to be champions? I wasn’t fully convinced – I wasn’t sure he could do that.

“But the showing with the squad that he accumulated, to the beginning of this season – and what I’ve seen this season – I just feel it might be about the time now for the baton to be handed over to somebody else who can take us on now.

“And I think Ole would leave now with his head held high because from when he came into where he got us at the beginning of the season I think it’s been positive.”
