Eight killed in crush at Travis Scott’s Astroworld fest

Eight people have been confirmed dead at Travis Scott’s Astroworld Festival.

A police official spoke to media and said there were also 11 cardiac arrests, 17 individuals transported to hospital, and “scores” of injuries.

The incident took place at 9pm in Houston, Texas where the crowd began to compress toward the front of the stage which created panic and injuries.

The cause of death for the eight individuals is still unconfirmed, the medical examiner is yet to complete their investigation.

The Houston Police Department sent units to the hospitals to identify the fatalities.

Dozens of ambulances, multiple medics and other personnel were seen tending to people at the third annual festival, a sold-out concert featuring multiple acts.

The Houston Fire Department stated that CPR was performed on at least two people, classifying it as a “level 2” incident due to the number of calls received.

Videos posted to social media showed officials giving CPR to some fans in the crowd at NRG Park as Scott continued to play. Some appeared to have been badly bleeding, and fans say they saw some people appearing lifeless.

Police officers were also seen putting up crime scene tape around part of the park early Saturday.

The reported injuries come hours after a stampede the perimeter of NRG Park prior, creating a chaotic situation for security personnel and event staff.

The chaos did not end with the entrance stampede, once inside, festival goers were seen climbing onto event infrastructure while security attempted to manage the crowd influx.

Tickets to the festival sold for $180 general admission and $490 for ‘stargazer’ tickets. The event was soon sold out, with 100,000 tickets selling in less than an hour.
