A 73-year-old man has been charged after two teenagers girls were killed in a boating crash over the Christmas holidays.
Police allege the 13-year-old and 14-year-old girls were being towed behind a boat on an inflatable device on the Namoi River in northeastern NSW when they hit a tree stump on December 27 last year.
They were seriously injured in the crash and onlookers tried to resuscitate them until paramedics arrived, but they could not be revived.
The accident happened near a caravan park on the Namoi at Rushes Creek, 600km from Tamworth, about 5pm on December 27.
The 73-year-old man who was allegedly driving the boat has been charged with operating a recreational vessel negligently and causing death.
He is expected to front Tamworth Local Court on July 17.
Police established a crime scene at the rural location after the accident, and seized the boat and other items involved in the crash.
A report is being prepared for the coroner over the two deaths.
