Electric car owners warned of laws surrounding private parking tickets

Electric car owners still face many challenges including range anxiety, long charging times, and now also private parking fines. Experts at YourParkingSpace stress that many motorists could find the fines “unfair” especially when the Government is pushing for an increased EV uptake.

Brannan Coady, the CEO at YourParkingSpace, explained: “Electric car drivers are facing penalties if they spend too long at electric charging stations.

“Whilst the DVLA is correct in providing information on motorists that are breaking the law, many motorists will view this as unfair after the Government’s encouragement of electric cars as opposed to petrol or diesel, with various locations across the country charging a £30 penalty for staying over an hour.

“With many motorists complaining that the maximum parking time is not enough to fully charge the vehicle, it’s likely that many drivers will be put off buying an electric car for the foreseeable future.”

Unfortunately for EV owners, the expert stressed that if they receive a parking fine after breaking the law, they will have to pay it.

However, many electric car drivers claimed that they have been treated “unfairly” and are being punished for something that is simply outside of their control.

Mr Coady advised that if motorists believe they have been treated unfairly they should first check the British Parking Association (BPA) or International Parking Community (IPC) websites.

There, drivers will be able to find if the parking company that issued the fine is a member of their approved operator schemes.

Mr Coady added: “Every parking company must be a member of one of these organisations.

The expert added: “If your appeal is rejected we would then recommend contacting the landowner directly. They’ll often be willing to sort it from their side.”

With many drivers struggling with costs, Mr Coady also shared some preventative measures that motorists should follow to avoid parking fines.

This includes things such as reading signs carefully and checking parking rules before leaving the vehicle.

Mr Coady said: “Before you leave your car somewhere, always double-check the signs. Even if you are familiar with the parking space, rules can change frequently so it’s always best to be sure.”

The expert also stressed that different car parks have different rules, so drivers should remain vigilant.

Even if motorists are familiar with a car park, they should remember that rules can often change.

Mr Coady said: “We strongly advise that motorists using an EV point within a private car park to read the signage. Don’t get caught out by maximum stay limits to avoid unnecessary fines.”

Lastly, the expert recommended booking a parking space in advance. He said: “Search the map for locations with EV charging points, place a booking, and pay online in advance.

“This makes it super easy to extend your stay, should something come up, in order to avoid an overstay charge.”
