On January 10, 2022, a herd of wild elephants were stranded in a canal in Karnataka’s Mysuru district. This incident took place when the elephants were trying to cross the canal. The elephants rushed towards the canal while they were being pursued by the people.
According to the Times of India, elephants wandered into Gurupura village and trampled over the fields. When the villagers tried to get them out of the field, they fled into Hanagodu village’s Lakshmana Tirtha river canal.
Susanta Nanda from the Indian Forest Service (IFS) shared the video of the elephants attempting to get out of the canal on social media. He wrote that “linear infrastructure in elephant corridors” is testing the limits of these animals. The tuskers were “fortunate” to be rescued by Forest Department employees.
Five animals can be seen falling many times as they attempt to climb out of the canal in the video clip. In the backdrop of the footage, several communities can be heard shouting.
Officer, Nanda mentioned that the herd was caught in the canal when people attempted to get the elephants back into the forest.. According to an Indian Express article, the animals were unable to cross the canal due to the rush of the water, which was exacerbated by the slick banks.
Forest officials arrived later at the scene and assisted the wild elephants in exiting the canal and continuing on to the Nagarahole Tiger Reserve.
The video of a herd of wild elephants straining to clamber out of the canal has sparked an online controversy.
Many users asked the state administration to ensure that development projects are well planned in order to reduce human-animal conflict.
