Fresh off the release of his memoir, Pageboy, Elliot Page is set to make his first return to the big screen in years.

Deadline reported on Monday that Page is playing a leading role in the forthcoming movie Close To You, from writer/director Dominic Savage, known for directing the BAFTA-winning TV films Nice Girl and When I Was 12. Details are scarce at the moment, but in the movie, which has wrapped production, the actor plays a character named Sam, who runs into an old friend (Hillary Baack) “on his way home to a dreaded family reunion that forces him to confront long-buried memories.” Page also collaborated with Savage to conceive and coauthor the story, which is about “love and belonging,” according to Variety.

The Umbrella Academy star told Deadline that he was “proud to have worked with Dominic and Hillary on this beautiful film.”

“It’s been a pleasure collaborating with them and the incredibly talented cast and crew,” he said. “I look forward to sharing it with audiences soon.”

Savage similarly said that it had been “a remarkable experience to collaborate with Elliot Page on this very special and unique film about love, identity, and family.”

“I’m so proud of what we have achieved with the film,” Savage told the entertainment publication. “It has been an honour to work with Elliot to bring this very poignant, personal and important story to life and to the screen.”

Page has been starring as Viktor Hargreeves in Netflix’s Umbrella Academy since 2019, and directed and appeared in the documentary There’s Something in the Water. But he hasn’t appeared in a feature film since 2017’s Flatliners.

That might be attributed to the repeatedly negative experiences Page had in Hollywood, as he detailed extensively in Pageboy. From being pressured to wear dresses and conceal his sexuality to tense homophobic confrontations with famous actors, the actor’s memoir revealed a grim portrait of the state of an industry that often purports to be LGBTQ+ affirming — not to mention the toll of being a closeted trans person on top of all of that. We’re hoping that Page’s return to film means that he’s feeling more empowered as an actor these days, and we can’t wait to see it.
