Elon Musk launches artificial intelligence company ‘XAI’ to “understand reality”

Tesla CEO Elon Musk on Wednesday announced the launch of his new company ‘XAI’ on Twitter, whose aim, he says, is to “understand the true nature of the universe.” Bringing to fruition his plans to create an alternative to the popular AI chatbot ChatGPT, he tweeted, “Announcing formation of @xAl to understand reality.” 

Musk had said on U.S. TV that he had plans to counter “biased” ChatGPT and his AI creation — xAI’s website says, “The goal of xAI is to understand the true nature of the universe. We are a separate company from X Corp, but will work closely with X (Twitter), Tesla, and other companies to make progress towards our mission.”

On its website, the company said its team, led by Musk, will constitute of members who early worked with companies involved in artificial intelligence and allied technologies, like Google’s DeepMind, Google Research, OpenAI, Microsoft and Tesla, and academic/academics from institutions like the University of Toronto.

Revealing a little more about the members of team xAI, the company said that its constituent members have worked on projects like the  Adam optimizer, Batch Normalization, Layer Normalization, and the discovery of adversarial examples. 

“We further introduced innovative techniques and analyses such as Transformer-XL, Autoformalization, the Memorizing Transformer, Batch Size Scaling, and μTransfer. We have worked on and led the development of some of the largest breakthroughs in the field including AlphaStar, AlphaCode, Inception, Minerva, GPT-3.5, and GPT-4,” it adds.
