Baz Luhrmann releases teaser for upcoming Elvis Presley biopic

The release date for the upcoming Elvis Presley biopic has been revealed by director Baz Luhrmann following delays.

The biographical film, simply titled Elvis, is set to chronicle the life and career of the ‘the King of Rock and Roll,’ with the legendary singer being played by Austin Butler.

A twenty-second teaser trailer was released yesterday on Instagram by its director Luhrmann, along with the release date of the film – which was primarily filmed in Australia.

The clip, which is accompanied by an atmospheric version of Suspicious Minds in the background, features what appears to be Butler as a young Elvis – seen from behind.

It also includes scenes of the singer walking backstage in his signature performance attire and concludes by revealing the film’s official release date of June 24 next year.

In the caption, co-writer and co-director Luhrmann – whose credits include Romeo + Juliet and Moulin Rouge! – wrote: “Made a little something to let you good people know we are taking care of business on June 24, 2022.”

The musical drama’s release is understood to have been pushed back several times amid the Covid-19 pandemic.

Production was temporarily halted in March last year when Tom Hanks – who plays Elvis’ manager Colonel Tom Parker – and his wife Rita Wilson tested positive for the virus.

The cast also includes Olivia DeJonge as Elvis’ wife Priscilla Presley, Yola Quartey as musician Sister Rosetta Tharpe and Luke Bracey as talent manager Jerry Schilling.

As reported by Entertainment Tonight, the casting of Elvis was a big decision, with Luhrmann previously saying that he couldn’t make the film if the actor wasn’t “absolutely right.”

The outlet reports that the writer and director was particularly impressed with Butler though, commenting that he had found in him someone who could “embody the spirit of one of the world’s most iconic musical figures.”

Butler previously told E! News: “I’ve just got to say how profoundly honoured I am that Baz has invited me on this journey with him. It’s truly the priviledge of a lifetime.”
