The seventh Chrome zero-day vulnerability of 2022 has been confirmed by Google as it issues an emergency security update addressing this single, high-rated issue.

Such single-issue security updates are rare, and the release across Windows, Mac, Linux, and Android serves to emphasize the potential impact CVE-2022-3723 could have on Chrome users.

What is CVE-2022-3723?

CVE-2022-3723, reported by Avast security researchers on October 25, is a ‘type confusion’ issue with Chrome’s V8 JavaScript engine. Google withholds detailed information on zero-day vulnerabilities until a majority of Chrome users have had the update rolled out to them.

However, this particular category of vulnerability is known to present a high level of danger to users. Attackers might typically exploit a type confusion error to execute arbitrary and malicious code, which could lead to them getting control of the users’ system. The speed with which Google has responded, issuing the emergency update within 48 hours, only goes to emphasize how important it is that your Chrome application is updated as soon as possible.

Make sure your Google Chrome browser is updated

Google says that the update to version 107.0.5304.87 for Mac and Linux users, and 107.0.5304.87 or 107.0.5304.88 for Windows, 107.0.5304.91 for Android, will start rolling out immediately. All users should see the update in the coming days or weeks, Google says.

It is recommended, however, that you are proactive given that an exploit has already been seen ‘in the wild.’ You can force an immediate update by checking the Help|About menu option. If the update is available, Chrome will automatically download and install it. You will need to restart your browser to activate the update, though.
