Rudy’s Can’t Fail Cafe has ended its run in Emeryville after 20 years.
“With a heavy heart, the ownership … has decided to permanently close operations, effective immediately,” said Monday’s Instagram and website post, which offered no insight into the reasons behind the decision. “Thank you to all of our amazing staff, customers and community for making Rudy’s the incredible place it was. You are Rudy.”
A second location had operated in Oakland near the Fox Theater, but shut down in 2018 after seven years.
Named after the Clash song “Rudie Can’t Fail,” the diner was launched in 2002 by co-owners Jeffery Bischoff, Steve Mills and Green Day bassist Mike Dirnt. The menu featured Americana classics with clever names: Mr. Roadie’s Fish and Chips, the Mile High Club, and for brunch, Your Own Private Eyedaho.
The eclectic eatery served breakfast all day and, until the pandemic hit, was open until the wee hours. During the pandemic, Rudy’s offered outdoor dining on Hollis Street.
In the farewell note, the owners paid tribute to the restaurant space they had taken over in 2002.
“We strived to create that same environment and ethos that the Yee Family did at Eugene’s Ranch House for 40 years before us but now it is time for Rudy to pass the torch.”
