Emily Ratajkowski is “done with fetishisation of female pain” as she criticises Marilyn Monroe biopic Blonde

Emily Ratajkowski has taken to TikTok to discuss Netflix’s new Marilyn Monroe biopic Blonde – and says she’s not surprised to hear it’s another movie that “fetishises female pain” while perfectly summarising her views on the controversial movie.

Since its release, the Ana de Armas starring film, directed by Andrew Dominik, has faced significant backlash for its sensationalist depiction of the late star’s life, with many arguing that we are seeing too many stories of exploited women getting the Hollywood treatment.

And model Emily has backed that belief, as she explained in a TikTok video: “So I’ve been hearing a lot about this Marilyn Monroe movie, Blonde, which I haven’t seen yet, but I’m not surprised to hear it’s yet another movie fetishising female pain, even in death.”

Speaking directly to the camera, who also called out Adam Levine during his cheating scandal recently, continued: “We love to fetishise female pain. Look at Amy Winehouse. Look at Britney Spears. Look at the way we obsess over [Princess] Diana’s death. Look at the way we obsess over dead girls and serial killers. Watch any CSI episode, and it’s this crazy fetishisation of female pain and death.”

Emily reluctantly added: “I think as woman, I can say for myself, I’ve learned how to fetishise my own pain and my own hurt, so it feels like something that can be tended to, that’s kind of sexy. ‘Oh, I’m this f***ed up girl and whatever,’ and I think we do that in many, many different ways. But I want that to change.”

Weeks after filing for divorce from Sebastian Bear-McClard, Emily Ratajkowski said: “I was thinking about it, and you know what’s kind of hard to fetishise? Anger. Anger is hard to fetishise. So I have a proposal. I think we all need to be a little more pissed off. I’m going to be in my witch era. 2022, baby, is my bitch era. I think we should all be in our bitch era. So, I’m going to be pissed off when I see this movie, I already know it, but it’s nothing new. Yeah, I’m just going to get angry.”

The movie Blonde has received plenty of criticism, especially with its confusing messages about miscarriages and pregnancy. Due to the controversial content of the film critic Grace Randolph announced earlier this year that she was not covering the film “in any capacity”, calling the adult content film’s presentation as a biography “pretty appalling” and “sick fantasy”.

However, director Andrew Dominik has made it clear that he’s not too bothered if audiences are disturbed by Blonde. In an interview with Screen Daily, he said: “It’s a demanding movie. If the audience doesn’t like it, that’s the f**king audience’s problem. It’s not running for public office.”

Nonetheless, audiences must remember that Blonde is based on a book of fiction by author Joyce Carol Oates. Therefore, it isn’t an accurate, biographical account that honours Marilyn’s life.
