Energy bills: ‘Phantom electricity’ items to unplug and save up to 10%

UK households are to be battered by another energy price cap rise by energy regulator Ofgem, forcing many households to take up Government grants in order to make ends meet. However, you could find yourself shelling out even more on your monthly bill due to devices which you aren’t even using.

A viral video posted by TikTok user Kathryn Kellogg, who posts under the username @goingzerowaste_, shared her top tips to “save money and save energy”.

She explained: “More than 10 percent of your electric bill comes from phantom electricity so make sure you unplug.”

This phantom electricity is also often referred to as “vampire devices”, which drain energy even when they are not in use.

Last winter, research by British Gas found that switching off certain household appliances, even just some of the time could see people slashing their energy bills by more than a quarter.

At the time, Marc Robson, an energy expert at British Gas, said: “Almost a third of total heating costs in the home are wasted through the roof and the walls and with vampire appliances, this figure is almost half of our electricity bills on wasted energy.

“Just switching some of these off can really help save straight away and those with a smart meter will be able to see the impact of this in real-time.”

Some of the main household “phantom energy” sources include leaving lights on when you are not in a room, leaving televisions and computers on standby and leaving the heating on all day in the winter.

Mr Robson recommended: “Use a smart thermostat to help keep your room temperature as low as possible for as long as possible to avoid using the heating when you might not need it.

Speaking to Express.co.uk, Callum Woodstock, energy expert at PropertyRescue said: “None of us can do without our fridges, however, these are the worst as they consume up to a third of our overall electricity use.

“Make sure that the fridge door is completely closed and never place hot food in the fridge as this gobbles up more energy.

“Keep your freezer as full as possible as an empty freezer uses up more energy and costs you cash.”
