Ireland have no injury concerns reported but will be without left-arm pacer Joshua Little, whom the team management has decided to rest after a gruelling IPL 2023 season as they want the speedster fresh for the World Cup qualifiers.

ENG vs IRE key players

England: (Wicket-keeper: Ben Duckett, Jonny Bairstow) Duckett and Bairstow are likely to feature in the game with the former in good form with the batter scoring 177 in his last knock at Lord’s in the County and had runs to his name in New Zealand and Pakistan series as well. Bairstow’s form is questionable as the batter to struggle to score runs recently.

(Batters: Zak Crawley, Ollie Pope, Harry Brook) Zak Crawley is likely to open the innings with Duckett. Crawley’s last Test outing against New Zealand didn’t go well as he scored 58 runs across four innings. The Kent opener returned to form with a knock of 170 last month in the County Championships, which was followed by a half century less than two weeks ago.

Ollie Pope is likely to bat at No. 3 and scored a century last month for Surrey after struggling in the away tours to New Zealand and Pakistan in the season. Expectations will be high for the nation’s No. 1 batter in the format Joe Root, who scored 153 and 95 in his last Test match before heading for IPL.

Harry Brook had a hit-or-miss season in IPL 2023 but left a good impact in the Test with good knocks against Pakistan and New Zealand.

(All-rounders: Ben Stokes, Chris Woakes) For Ben Stokes, big knocks are missing in the format this season and the batter saw limited action in the IPL as well. Woakes’ had above-par outings for Warwickshire in County with 10 wickets across three games while his bat largely remained silent.

(Bowlers: Stuart Broad, Jack Leach and Mark Wood, Matthew Potts) Veteran Stuart Broad will be carrying the fast bowling unit in the absence of several key names. The 36-year-old pacer took 13 wickets in his last three games for the Notts.

Mark Wood’s uncertainty may make space for Matthew Potts, who has been in great form with 22 wickets in the last three first-class games for Durham. Jack Leach is certain to play the role of sole spinner and has 11 wickets in three games this month.

Ireland (Wicketkeeper: Lorcan Tucker) Tucker has been in good form this season and scored a 97 against Essex in the practice game right before the Test.

(Batter: Andy Balbirnie, Paul Stirling, Harry Tector, James McCollum) All of Paul Stirling, James McCollum, and Harry Tector have scored centuries recently, including in the practice game against Essex. Skipper Andy Balbirnie has played decent knocks as well, including a half-century against Sri Lanka in Test.

(All-rounder: Andy McBrine, Curtis Campher, George Dockrell) Right-arm pacer Curtis Campher has struggled to pick wickets off late with just three wickets in the last four games but did score a century against Sri Lanka. Spinner Andy McBrine took three wickets and scored 67 too in the practice game against Essex.

Another orthodox spinner George Dockrell has been ineffective with the ball as well with just two wickets in the last two Tests. However, he did score 74 in the practice game. He scored the same amount of runs in England against Bangladesh in ODIs recently.

(Bowlers: Mark Adair, Craig Young, Graham Hume, Thomas Mayes) Ireland’s pace bowling hasn’t worked well in the Test format well with the likes of Mark Adair, Craig Young, Graham Hume have struggled to take wickets against quality batting line-ups.

However, familiar conditions may see them perform better while young pacer Thomas Mayes has also laid claim to a spot in the playing 11 with seven wickets in the practice game.

ENG vs IRE Pitch Report

The Lord’s pitch has something on the offer for both batters and bowlers with pacers getting ample amount of movement on the first two days. Batters may feel more comfortable as the match progress.
