Keeping ‘brilliant’ Joe Root quiet is big job for Australia, says Justin Langer

England have named a new-look 16-player squad for their upcoming T20I series against the West Indies, with two uncapped left-arm seamers included.

The five-match T20I series is due to begin on January 22, just four days after the conclusion of the fifth Ashes test.

As a result, none of the players involved in England’s tour of Australia have been included, with just eight players who featured in the T20 World Cup making the squad.

Captain Eoin Morgan will therefore be without the likes of Jos Buttler, Ben Stokes, Dawid Malan, Jonny Bairstow, Chris Woakes and Mark Wood.

England head coach Chris Silverwood will also not be on the tour, with assistant coach Paul Collingwood standing in as his replacement.

Sussex quick George Garton and Gloucestershire seamer David Payne could both make their international debuts, while opener Phil Salt could make his first T20I appearance, adding to his three ODI caps.

Somerset star Tom Banton and Lancashire quick Saqib Mahmood have been recalled, with James Vince, Liam Dawson and Reece Topley, all reserve players at the World Cup, also included.

The absence of leg-spinner Matt Parkinson is a surprising one, while the likes of Joe Clarke, Tom Kohler-Cadmore and Ben Duckett are all unlucky to have missed out.

“We have selected a strong squad with some serious batting power and a balanced attack as we begin preparations ahead of the T20 World Cup in Australia,” Collingwood said.

“The World Cup is less than a year away and there will be increased opportunities for the squad in the absence of those players who are with the Ashes squad.

“I have good memories of winning a World Cup in Barbados and I’m really looking forward to going back there with this squad to face a very good West Indies who will test all aspects of our skills.”

England T20I squad: Eoin Morgan, Moeen Ali, Tom Banton, Sam Billings, Liam Dawson, George Garton, Chris Jordan, Liam Livingstone, Saqib Mahmood, Tymal Mills, David Payne, Adil Rashid, Jason Roy, Phil Salt, Reece Topley, James Vince.
