England fans have expressed serious concerns ahead of the World Cup after the 1-0 defeat to Italy in the Nations League.
Besides sealing relegation from League A, the result marked a fifth match without a win for Gareth Southgate’s side.
It is the nation’s worst run of form since 2014 and, despite some of the world’s best attacking talent, their form in front of goal makes for even grimmer reading.
The Three Lions have failed to score from open play in 450 minutes of football, their worst run in that regard in 22 years, and a tally on par with San Marino in the Nations League.
With Qatar 2022 a matter of weeks away, fans are understandably concerned – even if Southgate insists the team are on the right track.
In fact, former Chelsea defender and talkSPORT host Jason Cundy suggested this might be the beginning of the end for the England boss.
Cundy told talkSPORT: “Right now, our nation are sleepwalking their way into a World Cup that is going to turn into an absolute disaster.
“I said ‘stinking the place out’, I can’t think of another description to describe what England are doing under Southgate.
“I have actually been a supporter of Gareth. I think he has done a very good job and changed the way we look at the England team.
“Now, I think we’re looking at the beginning of the end of Southgate.
“Tonight’s performance, it was better, that wasn’t difficult – but you have to call things as they are and we are going nowhere.
“If this was Premier League or Champions League and we saw that performance, the rhetoric would be that he’s lost the dressing room and they’re not playing for the manager.
“That, to me right there, is very worrying.”
#SouthgateOUT started trending on Twitter and fans called talkSPORT to expressed their discontent.
Adam, an England supporter, said: “He needs to go before the World Cup.
“I wouldn’t even put him on the flight back with the players!
“It needs to happen. Let’s be honest, with those five results in the Premier League, he would’ve been gone a long time ago.
“He said that was a close performance? Close to what!?”
