England, who haven’t won the T20 World Cup since winning the inaugural edition in 2009, were a force to reckon with in the group stages with four wins out of four games. South Africa took the inroads to the semifinal as they defeated Bangladesh on the final day of the group stages to reach the knockout stage.
England’s strength in the batting off late has been Nat Sciver-Brunt, who scored back-to-back half centuries to set herself up as the star attraction for the second semifinal. Opener Dani Wyatt, who was struggling to perform in the group stages, scored 59 in the last group game to find form right before the big games.
England still worry over the form of their captain Heather Knight and opener Sophia Dunkley as the duo has disappointed with the bat of late. This makes the presence of Amy Jones down the order vital and the wicketkeeper-batter so far has lived up to the task with two consecutive 40-odd innings.
Their bowling has been in good shape with the spin trio of Sophia Ecclestone, Sarah Glenn and Charlie Dean with 20-plus wickets among them this tournament. Pacer Katherine Sciver Burnt heads to the semifinals with two wickets to her name at the venue in the last game and is likely to have Lauren Bell instead of Freya Davies as her new-ball partner.
South Africa head into the gain with winning momentum as they defeated Bangladesh by 10 wickets. Laura Wolvaardt scored 66 in the triumph to gain form while Tasmin Britz scored half-century after scoring 45 in the game before.
Skipper Sune Luus is expected to provide stability as she has averaged 23-plus while the rest of the pack has yearned for consistency in their performances.
Marizanne Kapp has been crucial with the ball with seven wickets in the group stages. Nonkuleleko Mlaba has been among wickets with the new ball as well as she took five wickets in three games so far. Paccer Shabnim Ismail took three wickets in the last two games.
Among bowlers, new-ball spinner Nonkuleleko Mlaba has hit the purple patch with five wickets in the last three spells. Shabnim Ismail has been effective economically and has taken three wickets in four games.
Medium pacer Ayobonga Khaka was impressive as well with two wickets for just 21 runs.
