Enjoyable series looks behind Sky Sports’ deadline day with key fax and figures

With just a few days to go until the curtains are drawn on the transfer window, football clubs across Europe are a hive of activity.

Exotically named players and their agents will be sweeping into training grounds while doctors will be busy tapping knees and encouraging coughs, and stadiums will hum to the sound of fax machines spewing out faintly printed contracts and impressive wage demands.

Many fans, having been teased with possible signings, some well-known, some well past their prime, will wake on Wednesday eager to find if their club has bagged that South American striker or Portuguese playmaker only to discover an untried midfielder who has been loaned back to his last club and is unlikely ever to grace the shirt.

One organisation guaranteed to embrace this biannual spree are the good, yellow-clad folks at Sky Sports. True, even their enthusiasm has waned in recent years.

We no long wait eagerly as Jim White enters the studio for the final countdown and their roving reporters are now ensconced behind club walls and no longer at the mercy of questionably aged youths on Chopper bikes or well-refreshed teens wielding sex toys.

The once-familiar Harry Redknapp Range Rover interview has also bitten the dust: the likes of Antonio Conte, Mikel Arteta and, thankfully, Unai Emery all less engaging at the training-ground gates.

Fear not, though, for Sky have not completely given up on this merry-go-round and now offer a more insightful look into the stories behind the ticker.

Deadline Day: Football’s Transfer Window [Sky Documentaries] is a four-part series detailing the work that goes on behind the scenes.

Filmed during the last window, episode one features Tottenham’s Japhet Tanganga as he looks to escape to Milan and Cucho Hernandez as he leaves Watford for Columbus Crew.

‘Late in the window you’re probably signing players you shouldn’t be,’ says West Ham owner David Sullivan in a possible hint to manager David Moyes that he should stop flicking through football’s equivalent of the Argos catalogue.

An enjoyable series and a rare and fascinating glimpse into the game’s less transparent side.
