The Spaniard is out of contract at the end of the season but he’s set to sign a new deal, albeit on a reduced salary.
Though Ten Hag has publicly claimed he’s happy with De Gea, privately he’s concerned by the Spaniard’s form.
De Gea has been at fault for four goals this term – the joint-most of any goalkeeper in the division. His shot-save percentage is the third lowest of any goalkeeper with more than five appearances.
Though the former Atletico Madrid man is leading the race for the golden glove with 14 clean sheets this season, his distribution has been questioned.
If United are to make the progress that is necessary to compete for titles, it looks increasingly unlikely that De Gea will be the man to take them there.
United have looked at the likes of David Raya and Diogo Costa but the Manchester Evening News claim the club’s search has been expanded and now includes Anderlecht ace Verbruggen.
The 20-year-old made his debut for the Belgian club two years ago when Vincent Kompany was at the helm.
He’s since gone on to earn a call-up for the Netherlands national side, though he’s yet to make his debut.
While Verbruggen lacks experience, De Gea’s mistakes have proven costly this term.
The Spaniard was at fault for the only goal in West Ham’s win against the Red Devils last Sunday.
He’s been given no assurances over remaining first choice, despite the fact that he’ll be handed a new deal.
