Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag is hopeful Luke Shaw can return quickly from injury, also revealing Alejandro Garnacho will play again before the end of the season.

Shaw started Wednesday’s 1-0 win over Brentford but was forced off after just 37 minutes with Tyrell Malacia coming onto replace him.

Offering an update on the England international, ten Hag suggested United’s medical staff are still monitoring the player ahead of Saturday’s Premier League clash with Everton.

While he could miss the visit of Sean Dyche’s side, the Dutchman says the outlook on Shaw’s fitness is ‘quite positive’ ahead of a pivotal season run-in.

‘You have to see over days how [Shaw] progresses,’ ten Hag told a press conference on Friday.

‘Sometimes you underestimate this injury, but I think Luke did quite well and knows his body. He went off at the right moment before getting more damage. So in this moment we are quite positive about him returning quickly.’

Garnacho meanwhile was sidelined with an ankle injury during the goalless draw with Southampton in March following a heavy challenge from Kyle Walker-Peters, later leaving the stadium on crutches.

The Argentina youth international has proved to be a superb option off the bench for United this season, scoring four and providing five assists since breaking into the team in October.

While he will not be rushed back to action, ten Hag is confident the 18-year-old will have a role to play in the coming weeks.

‘We have something in our heads, but I don’t want – he will definitely be back before the end of the season,’ ten Hag said.

‘I think he will be in the final stages, but I don’t want to bring so much pressure on the medical and Garnacho to set a date when to be back.’

Victory midweek against Brentford saw United climb back into fourth spot, level on points with third place Newcastle United and three clear of Tottenham in fifth.

Following Saturday’s game with Everton, United host Sevilla in the first leg of their Europa League quarter-final on Thursday.
