Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag could be set for frustration in the transfer market as Arsenal look to sign Ajax defender Lisandro Martinez.

Ten Hag’s frustration

Arsenal could beat Manchester United to the signature of Ajax defender Lisandro Martinez.

United’s Premier League rivals have already been busy in the summer transfer market, with the Old Trafford outfit yet to bring in any new players. But Martinez is reportedly a player that Ten Hag had earmarked as a target, with the Dutchman keen to bring in a quick centre-back capable of defending one v one.

Missing out on yet another player would mean a frustrating start to the summer transfer window for Ten Hag as he sets about overhauling his squad.

De Jong transfer blow

Manchester United have been handed a significant blow to their hopes of signing Frenkie de Jong this summer.

Barcelona’s financial difficulties have led to them considering selling the Dutch midfielder, but the Spanish outfit have now voted in favour of the sale of Barca’s future merchandising and television rights. This allows current president Joan Laporta to sell 25% of the club’s La Liga broadcasting rights and 49.9% of the club’s official Barca Licensing and Merchandising subsidiary.

The move could provide a £600m cash injection – meaning Barcelona may not necessarily have to part ways with De Jong.

Coaching reshuffle

Erik ten Hag has had to continue his backroom reshuffle after Manchester United’s highly-rated head of player development and coaching Justin Cochrane was poached by Brentford.

Cochrane will take up a role with the Premier League outfit’s first-team, leading to United having to confirm a new coaching set-up. Mark Dempsey, who was appointed by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in 2020, will take command of the U23s next season, while Travis Binnion, United’s U18 lead-coach, will take over Cochrane’s previous post.

It is the latest move as new boss Erik ten Hag begins his Manchester United revolution.
