Erik ten Hag’s misery compounded as Ian Wright gives Pep Guardiola verdict

Ten Hag has overseen a dismal start to the season. United have been unable to arrest their spiralling form, although last Saturday’s narrow 1-0 victory over Luton offered some respite for the Dutchman.

The Old Trafford outfit have lost nine matches already this term, a club-record for this stage of the season. There have been six defeats in the Premier League and a further three in the Champions League, putting their hopes of qualifying for the European knockouts in serious jeopardy.

The former Ajax boss insists that his players are backing his methods. But fans are split over whether he should be replaced before United’s form becomes worse.

And in a devastating blow to Ten Hag, ex-striker Wright has said that arch-rival Guardiola would be getting more out of the United squad than the 53-year-old has achieved.

Asked if Guardiola would be performing well at United, Wright told the Stick To Football podcast: “Yes. Players get better under Pep and that’s what you’re not seeing at United at the minute. Players get better under [Guardiola] and you’d assume that he’d do the same at United.”

United continue to back Ten Hag despite the club’s poor form. It remains to be seen if Sir Jim Ratcliffe, whose bid for a quarter of the club will be ratified soon, will retain the head coach.

Ten Hag oversaw an improved performance in the victory over Luton last weekend. However, he expressed concern over the cautious approach of his players.

“We create many chances and we could have made life easier if we score goals,” Ten Hag reflected.

“In the first half, I observed four 100 per cent chances. If you get the first, you get the second and it becomes easier.

“I told them at half-time we are not taking risks. If you bring bodies higher on the pitch, the opportunity to score goals is higher. It will come but with those four 100 per cent chances, one has to find the net.”
