Erling Haaland explains why he spoke out as Man Utd and Man City keep close watch

Erling Haaland has explained why he needed to publicly comment on transfer speculation earlier this month as his relationship with Borussia Dortmund appears to strain. The striker has been linked with all the top clubs across Europe, including Premier League Manchester United and Manchester City, and has a big decision to make in the summer.

Haaland is widely believed to have a transfer release clause become active in his contract this summer.

It will allow him to leave Dortmund for around £65million. That will likely be a bargain for whichever club wins the race for his signature.

The 21-year-old has scored a staggering 80 goals in just 79 appearances since joining the Bundesliga club from RB Salzburg in January 2020.

He has become one of the most highly sought players in world football, with Premier League clubs fighting with clubs across Europe to sign him.

Haaland had remained silent on his future until a blockbuster interview earlier this month. He appeared to take a swipe at his club for forcing him into a decision.

“That’s what [Dortmund] want and it means that things are going to start happening,” he told Sky.

“I have said from the beginning that I just wanted to focus on playing and thus give my best version.

“I didn’t want to have other things in mind. But now that they pressure me, it’s time to value the future.”

Watzke said: “He is a spontaneous person. You are allowed to do that. No problem with Erling.

“But you must also understand our situation. We can’t wait until the end of May.”

Haaland is expected to remain at Dortmund until the end of the season, when a bidding war is likely to commence.

Man Utd and Man City are both expected to be key players in that auction as both clubs need new strikers.
