The Denver Nuggets and Los Angeles Lakers began their much anticipated Western Conference Finals series on Tuesday night.
Despite a great 40-point performance from Anthony Davis, the top-seeded Nuggets were able to come away with the victory to open the series. Two-time league MVP Nikola Jokic recorded a 34-point triple-double to lead Denver to the win, even after the Lakers made a late effort to come back.
With Game 2 set for Thursday night, ESPN Analytics is predicting the winner of the game.
According to ESPN, the Nuggets have a 59.3% chance to win Game 2 and take a 2-0 lead in the series. Despite being the No. 7 seed in the West, the Lakers have yet to trail in a playoff series this year.
The Nuggets are undefeated at home in the playoffs this season, which could be disastrous for the Lakers if the series extends. Denver would play at home in the all-important Games 5 and 7, meaning the Lakes would likely need to pull off a huge upset to stave off elimination.
The Nuggets had the second best home record in the NBA in the regular season at 34-7 this year. If they’re able to defend home court on Thursday, they would be only two wins away from their first appearance in the Finals in franchise history.
