“You guys this is wild. An innocent celebration for my mom’s milestone 60th birthday has turned into an absurd political statement, which was not the intention,” the 24-year-old Emmy-nominated actress tweeted. “Please stop making assumptions. Much love to everyone and Happy Birthday Mom!”

The photos, which were taken at a birthday party for Sweeney’s mother, were captioned, “No better way to celebrate my momma than a surprise hoedown,” and showed attendees wearing red hats emblazoned with the slogan “Make Sixty Great Again” — which was a play on former U.S. President Donald Trump’s “Make America Great Again” campaign slogan. The snaps showed guests riding a mechanical bull and line dancing, but one contentious image featured a man wearing a T-shirt with a U.S. flag and a thin blue line — a symbol of the “Blue Lives Matter” movement and a piece of clothing that has been spotted at white supremacist rallies.
During the Black Lives Matter protests that gripped America during the summer of 2020, Sweeney spoke out on the movement on her social media. “We need to do better. The hate in this world needs to end. #BlackLivesMatter,” she tweeted.

Sweeney quickly faced the wrath of wokesters with one critic complaining, “Damn is this a MAGA rally??” while another added, “disappointed but not surprised.” Several others chided her picture selection and her claims of an “innocent celebration.”

“You should have selected other pictures to post that wouldn’t be left up to interpretation in this manner. Lesson learned for you, I ‘assume,’” wrote one detractor with a second person continuing, “You’re not responsible for your family’s bigoted beliefs, but it’s ridiculous for you to claim people are ‘making assumptions’ when the shirt literally is a political statement.”
“Kinda funny how Sydney Sweeney carefully curated her IG post so that none of the MAGA-inspired hats were seen and then her dimwitted brother’s post blew it all up,” a third person jabbed.
Another observer cheered the Twitter pile on, declaring, “If you are white and unwilling to shame your parents for their conservative views, you’re just as complicit and need to be escorted out.”

But even though the pics caused a stir on social media, many comments on Sweeney’s online gallery were positive with her initial post garnering over 2.4 million likes on Instagram.
“My dad voted for Trump (twice) and I still love him LMAO, just because your family thinks one way doesn’t mean you all have to think the same,” one supporter tweeted.
