Europe Travel: 2 Low-Cost EU Airlines Launch New Routes To U.S.

0

For anyone pining for a piping hot pain au chocolat, fresh from a French boulangerie or anyone looking to marvel at an Icelandic geyser, there are two new low-cost ways to get to European hubs this summer, with new U.S. routes beginning from relative newcomers to the airline industry.

Low-cost airline French Bee launches Los Angeles-Paris route

French Bee launched a low-cost route from Los Angeles (LAX) to Paris (ORY), holding its inaugural flight on 1 May 2022. The route will fly three times each week for now, leading up to six weekly flights by July. The airline operates with Airbus 350s, holding 411 passengers.

The flight lasts 10 hours and prices start from $321 one-way for a basic ticket, with the ability for customers to buy more legroom and more in-flight meals (the basic ticket comes with just one meal).

The expansion from French Bee comes despite losses of more than 50% and 40% in 2020 and 2021 respectively during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Low-cost airline Play launches Iceland-U.S. routes, starting with Washington D.C.

The low-cost Icelandic airline Play, which uses the tagline, “pay less, play more” flies to 22 European destinations and launched during the pandemic–the only low-cost airline to do so.

Since 20 April 2022, Play has been flying from Reykjavik to Baltimore/Washington D.C (BWI) and plans to launch a service to Boston (BOS) on May 22, from New York (SWF) on June 9 and during the fall, it will start a seasonal route from Orlando (MCO) beginning on October 1.

Fares to Iceland from Washington D.C. start at $133 one-way for a little more leg-room than is traditionally provided by other low-cost carriers–at 34 inches of seat pitch and 200 seats per plane. The airline also offers a pay-as-you-go model, adding on extra legroom and bigger bags. Stopovers can also be factored into ticket prices at no extra cost.

The airline does not plan to be too aggressive in its expansion strategy and will focus on North America’s East Coast–good news for Americans looking to find a cheaper way to head to Europe this summer.
