Toyota has yet to officially enter the electric pickup truck segment, but when it does, it’ll probably do so with some success. According to an EV truck survey conducted annually by Autolist.com, 20 per cent of U.S. new-car shoppers are most interested in the Toyota Tacoma EV that’s “widely expected during the model’s next generation of production.” Yes, “widely expected”: in other words, the Tacoma EV, while it doesn’t exist and hasn’t been officially announced, is somehow top of the wish list for one-in-five electric truck shoppers.

An even greater number (24 per cent) of the 1,175 U.S. car shoppers surveyed in October and November named the Ford F-150 Lightning their top pick. For the second year running, the Lightning leads the segment in customer intent, but at least it’s actually here.

And because Autolist also breaks down its findings by respondents’ generation, we see the Blue Oval’s electric pickup essentially gaining popularity as shoppers age, with Baby Boomers voting it as the best option 31 per cent of the time, followed by Gen X 25 per cent of the time, Millennials 19 per cent, and Gen Z 16 per cent.

The pattern reverses for the long-delayed Tesla Cybertruck, which appears to be the top choice for 32 per cent of Gen Z shoppers; and the least preferred by the more skeptical and/or Elon-averse Baby Boomers (6 per cent).

Chevrolet’s Silverado EV was ranked the fourth most sought-after on the list with 13 per cent, followed by the forthcoming Ram 1500 Revolution (9 per cent), GMC Hummer EV SUT (7 per cent), GMC Sierra EV (6 per cent), and Rivian R1T (6 per cent).
