Everton boss Frank Lampard’s cheeky Van de Beek request that made Man Utd say ‘no way’

United’s firm stance on the option to buy clause may not be for the sole purpose of preventing Everton from activating it, but the player himself may also be keen on a permanent switch after being starved of opportunities at Old Trafford.

“The conversation with Frank Lampard was important for me to choose Everton – [it] was really positive,” said Van de Beek.

“He told me that we can do a great job together, we have the same football ideas.”

Lampard’s first assignment as boss will be Saturday’s FA Cup fourth-round tie against Brentford but attention will swiftly turn back towards the Premier League when they head to Newcastle three days later.
