United’s firm stance on the option to buy clause may not be for the sole purpose of preventing Everton from activating it, but the player himself may also be keen on a permanent switch after being starved of opportunities at Old Trafford.
“The conversation with Frank Lampard was important for me to choose Everton – [it] was really positive,” said Van de Beek.
“He told me that we can do a great job together, we have the same football ideas.”
Lampard’s first assignment as boss will be Saturday’s FA Cup fourth-round tie against Brentford but attention will swiftly turn back towards the Premier League when they head to Newcastle three days later.
