Everton complete Coady loan signing and are expected to announce another transfer

Everton have completed the loan signing of Conor Coady and are expected to wrap up a deal for Amadou Onana imminently.

Lille midfielder Onana was at Goodison Park for the Toffees’ opening day 1-0 defeat to Chelsea, while Wolves captain Coady was left out of his side’s loss to Leeds.

“It’s incredible to join Everton,” Coady told evertontv. “As soon as I heard the interest, from the manager but also the football club itself, I really wanted to be part of it straight away. I’m over the moon to join.

“I’ve grown up around the city, I know the football club, how big this club is and what it means to the supporters. I’m someone who was desperate to come here, to play for this club. I’ve got family and friends who are massive Evertonians.

“I’m here to give absolutely everything I’ve got for this football club. It’s important I work as hard as I can to help my teammates, help the Club move forward and make people proud.”

Manager Frank Lampard added: “We are delighted to bring a player of Conor’s quality and vast experience to Everton and he fits into how we want to play as a team.

“As well as being one of the Premier League’s most reliable defenders and an England international, his leadership skills will be of huge benefit to us, too.”

England international defender Coady may be considered a surprise signing given the fact he grew up in the academy of fierce rivals Liverpool, captaining the side’s youth teams, and has supported the Reds since he was a boy.

“Everybody knows I supported Liverpool growing up but I’m playing for Wolves now,” Coady said before meeting his old side in 2019.

“I look at Liverpool’s results and hope they win games – it’s as simple as that.

“But I play for Wolves now and I play for this football club no matter who we are playing against. We’re going there to win and that’s the mentality we’ll all have.

“My mates are all Liverpool season ticket holders. They keep saying things to me about it. I’ve had millions of ticket requests, absolutely millions. I don’t know how I’m going to do it to be honest.”

For Everton though, the deal makes plenty of sense, given potentially serious injuries to key defenders Ben Godfrey and Yerry Mina in their opening fixture.

Godfrey will be a long-term absentee after breaking his leg and being diagnosed with a fractured fibula, while Mina’s time out is unknown due to an ankle injury.

Frank Lampard had already bolstered his defence with the signing of James Tarkowski from Burnley, who was later joined by fellow former Claret and tricky winger Dwight McNeil.

Everton’s clash at Aston Villa on Saturday, live on talkSPORT could also see Onana feature, after Lampard spoke in glowing terms about the likely midfield addition who was also courted by West Ham.

“I am a big fan, that is why he is coming,” he said.

“When you come in as a manager you want to influence the style of the team and he is a young player that has, for me, everything in terms of physicality, quality on the ball and defensive mindset, an all-rounder for us.

“He is going to have a big impact on the club and is a good lad with real confidence about him. I don’t want to hang too much on him, but I am very pleased he is coming in.”
