Everything we know about Tell it Like a Woman, the empowering Oscar-nominated film starring Cara Delevingne and Jennifer Hudson

If you paid any attention to the Oscar’s 2023 nominations you would have noticed Tell It Like a Woman was one of this year’s surprise nominees, up for Best Original Song. It might be slightly under-the-radar but we reckon this one is set to be big considering the fact it has an all-star cast and touches on topical issues faced by women across the globe.

Exploring what it means to be a woman, in this film a group of female writers and directors have come together to create a film anthology, with seven different stories about women, each directed by different filmmakers around the world. Tell It Like a Woman looks at the challenges women face every day, highlighting both the highs and heartbreaking lows. The project, unsurprisingly earned itself an Oscar nomination for its song “Applause” written by Grammy and Emmy-award winning songwriter Diane Warren which is performed in the film by singer and actress Sofia Carson.

What is the plot for Tell it Like a Woman?

Featuring seven stories of different women around the world, the plot for Tell It Like A Woman is unusual in its narrative. Told in five languages, while there is no ‘bridge’ between the stories to link all characters, each film is universal in its message to show the struggles and misunderstandings faced by the seven different protagonists and their determination and resilience to overcome difficulties.

Among the stories include “Pepcy and Kim,” directed by Taraji P. Henson and starring Jennifer Hudson as a woman being released from prison and worried about what awaits her.

“Elbows Deep,” from director Catherine Hardwicke, follows Marcia Gay Harden and Jasmine Luv as medical professionals checking on a homeless woman, played by Cara Delevingne living in a California hotel room during the pandemic.

Tell It Like a Woman is a feature film comprised of 7 short stories whose common denominator is the representation of female protagonists. Each of these very different women faces a particular challenge in their life with extreme determination and courage that makes them stronger and more self-aware. Some of these inspirational and empowering stories, which take place all over the world, are inspired by true events, while others are narrative fiction. An all-star cast and award-winning directors come together for this poignant anthology feature shot in the US, Italy, India, and Japan.
