Former Ajax winger Quincy Promes has been sentenced to 18 months in prison for assaulting his cousin.

The 31-year-old, who now plays for Spartak Moscow, stabbed the victim in the knee during a family party in Abcoude in July 2020.

Promes was found guilty of aggravated assault by a Dutch court but as he is currently in Russia it is unclear if he will now return to the Netherlands.

The assault came to light because Promes’ phone was tapped in a drug trafficking investigation.

Promes will also stand trial later this year for allegedly importing two consignments of cocaine, a total of 1362 kilos, via the port of Antwerp.

Promes, who also played for Spanish side Sevilla, has been capped 50 times by the Netherlands national side.
