If a continental breakfast is an important factor when you’re considering hotels, you may want to rethink which hotels you’re staying at.

Brandi Augustus, a former hotel employee from Tennessee, has gone viral with her revelations of the hotel industry and why you should avoid the free breakfasts that come with your stay.
“If your hotel serves, like, a hot continental breakfast or whatever — eggs, waffles, stuff like that — don’t eat that s—,” said Augustus on her TikTok video that has over 1.5 million views.
Whether it’s corporate or management, “they don’t give a s— about that breakfast.”
The 36-year-old has worked in the hospitality industry for 15 years, as a front desk employee and a night auditor. She began in high-end hotels but moved on to more budget-friendly places where she quickly learned food safety standards didn’t exist.
The two-plus-minute video, titled Don’t eat the free breakfast! ” and capped with appropriate ominous music, explained while she was training for a night auditor position, she was taught to use one paper towel — not a rag or a sponge — to clean everything from cooking utensils to dinnerware to tables.

She suggested potential guests should steer clear of the waffle station — even though it’s a continental breakfast favourite. Employees fail to clean it and the batter, which starts to “smell like beer” after a while, isn’t fresh.
That was the last straw for her.
“When I was told to smell the waffle batter to check if it was still good, I just lost all hope,” Augustus said. “That completely soured my stomach, as the batter had a slight smell to it but the container was a little over half full — so instead of wasting the old batter, I was told to just mix new batter into it and the smell would go away. That smell was bacteria multiplying.”
She reported problems to management but was told “they passed health checks, so they couldn’t be doing too bad.”
Augustus recommended those who want a quality breakfast, find a hotel that has a chef that makes it fresh and right in front of you.
